The Dana Point Festival of Whales Parade is Saturday, March 3.  RH Dana's students will meet at 8:30 am at Strands Beach.  This year, we'll be carrying the shark balloon. Remember to wear your school colors for the parade.

All students at RH Dana will participate in our third annual Whale Watching field trip on March 1st. Students always enjoy riding on the boat and viewing the sea life. It's an amazing hands-on learning experience! We thank Dana Wharf Sportfishing for sponsoring our trip!

The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. Parent Conferences will be held during the week of October 30.    Students will have an early out dismissal of 12:45 pm that week. November 1 is a pupil free day. Parent conferences are an important opportunity for parents and teacher to discuss your child's progress, needs, ask questions of the teacher, and receive your child's report card.  If you must cancel or change your conference time, please call the front office.

 

On October 31, students are encouraged to wear orange and black spirit colors (no costumes.)

The PTA and YMCA are teaming up this year to offer a fun "trunk & treat" event for our students on Friday, October 27 from 6:30-8:00 pm on the RH Dana Blacktop.  Students can come dressed in their costumes and food will be sold during the event. See the attached flyer for more info.

To further help our school be a safe and respectful place and in honor of National Bullying Prevention month, this October we will teach the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit. In the lessons, your child will learn specific skills to help stop bullying. Students will learn how to:

  • Recognize when bullying is happening
  • Report bullying to a caring adult
  • Refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or others
  • Be a bystander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying

Once a month, RH Dana partners with Second Harvest to host a Farmer's Market. The market is held on a Monday from 1:30 - 2:30 pm.  All families are welcomed to come and pick up free fresh vegetables and fruit.  Just remember to bring a grocery bag.  Dates for Farmer's Market are:

All 5th graders will pose for a panoramic photo on April 26.  This is a traditional photo opportunity offered to our 5th grade classes. Students who wish to purchase the photo will need to bring in their money in the Lifetouch envelope by April 26.

All 5th graders will take a placement test for 6th grade math on April 20.  A make-up will be offered on April 21. It is important that all 5th graders are present for the test as this will be the only dates offered for the placement exam.

Our third through fifth graders will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in ELA and Math as well as the 5th Grade Science (CAST) from May 1-19, 2017.  During the testing window, students will need to eat a protein-rich breakfast, arrive to school on time, and get a good night’s rest.  Results from the tests will be available in fall 2017.

Registration for Session 4 is open! After-School Experience classes will start the week of March 27th at our school.  RH Dana will be offering the BrainStorm: LEGO Battlebots starting on March 28, 2017. After-School  Experience classes are taught by CUSD teachers and professional experts.  All classes are held on CUSD school sites following school dismissal times.  Please visit website www.saddleback.edu/ce for program information and to registerNo on-site registration will be accepted to pre-register! Registration closes at midnight prior to the first class.  Classes that do not reach the minimum enrollment will be canceled. The  PTA is hosting Talent Show tryouts on March 9 afterschool.  Students will need a signed parent permission slip to participate.  If students need music for their act, they will need to bring the music on their phone or IPod.  Rehearsals will occur afterschool on March 16 and 23.  Talent Show will be held on the evening of March 24 in RH Dana's MPR.

This year, RH Dana will be marching in the Dana Point Festival of Whales Parade on March 4.  Families are asked to meet at Strands Beach at 8:30 am.  We will be carrying the blue whale balloon and banner and will need 14 adult carriers.  Please bring heavy duty gloves if you would like to assist with carrying the balloon.  Students are asked to come dressing in RH Dana spiritwear and/or blue shirts.

We will be partnering once again with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County to host a monthly food  pantry program on our campus. A Farmer’s Market will typically host 100-200 families from the community and distribute fresh produce, offering a variety of 4-8 items, with each family receiving up to 20 lbs. of produce.  Below are the specific distribution dates and times for this year’s Farmer’s Market.
